An alleged pedophile who was supposed to appear in court plunged 500 feet to his death while hiking the Matterhorn in Switzerland. The accident occurred just one day before Pennsylvanian engineer Patrick James Harper was to face 52 counts of possessing child pornography.
Officials say the 52-year-old’s body was found in steep, rocky terrain not far from a ski slope near Zermatt. Family members say that Harper, a father of four, was there on vacation with his wife Beth. However, he was said to be hiking alone.
Harper was free on bond while he awaited trial. He had admitted to authorities in November that he downloaded child porn onto his laptop through BitTorrent. The investigation dates back to 2014.
Harper was known as an ardent lover of skiing, hiking, and climbing. According to his sister, “he was very athletic, a family person, just a happy guy.”
