Anyone is capable of committing a crime—celebrities, law officials, even famous athletes. It is usually those in the spotlight who commit the worst offenses—because they think they will never get caught or punished.
Famous athletes have always been known for getting into some sort of trouble. They are notorious for cheating on their wives, disobeying team rules, and driving under the influence. However, there are some sports stars who really defied the law and went ahead and committed heinous crimes. Unfortunately for many of these creeps, they were caught and given the punishments they truly deserved. Some will never see the outside world as we know it and, for that, women and children everywhere can worry less.
There are definitely way more stories out there, but here are the top 4 sports stars who committed terrible crimes:
Michael Vick
Vick is one of the rare athletes who was convicted as a criminal, went to prison, and resumed his playing career. According to the feds, he not only hung dogs, but the Eagles quarterback started up a dog-fighting enterprise, lied about his involvement, and ended up doing only 2 years (548 days) in jail for it.
Rae Carruth
Rae Carruth is a former wide receiver of the Carolina Panthers. In 2001, he was convicted of conspiring to murder Cherica Adams, his pregnant girlfriend who was carrying their child. Adams was 8 months pregnant with Carruth’s child and was shot 4 times in the stomach. Adams was able to call the police and explained what happened. The baby survived and was successfully delivered during an emergency C-section. A loss of oxygen to his brain during the shooting left the baby with severe physical and mental disabilities. Adams later fell into a coma at the hospital and died less than a month later.
Carruth fled and was eventually caught hiding in a trunk of a car with $3,900, a cell phone, candy bars, and bottles of his own urine. He was arrested and convicted of hiring a hit man to kill his girlfriend. He was sentenced to 24 years in prison.
Aaron Hernandez
Aaron Hernandez, a former tight end for the New England Patriots, was found guilty of murder early this year. He was convicted of the murder of Odin Lloyd, the boyfriend of his fiancé’s sister. Lloyd was shot and his body was found only a mile away from Aaron’s house.
It was believed that Aaron’s motive for killing Lloyd was that he knew too much information about a drive-by murder that Hernandez was involved with in Boston back in 2012. The drive-by shooting allegedly started over a spilled drink at a club. Hernandez is still awaiting trial for that incident.
The prosecution had a wealth of evidence pinning Hernandez to Lloyd’s murder, including witnesses, cell phone records and home surveillance video. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Jerry Sandusky
This is the worst case of them all. Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State defensive coordinator, was found guilty on a laundry list of sexual abuse charges that ranged from highly disturbing soap wars with young boys to on-campus rapes. Sandusky, who apparently never spent more than a half hour without molesting a kid, will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Famous Athletes Aren’t The Only Ones Who Need a Criminal Background Check
If you’re over the age of 15 you know how the bad the world we live in can be. It’s hard to trust people, even those we claim to know. We don’t even want our kids to idolize famous athletes because so many of them have some sort of criminal past.
To make sure your family is safe, you will want to run a criminal background check on any new people that come into your life. You may even want to check out your son’s new favorite football player to see what his criminal records hold. If you find something you don’t like then you can save your money on all the jerseys and posters you son will want to buy – I mean who would want a picture of a rapist or murderer hanging up in their house?
